I did one million stupid things.

Mother Mother's latest album, Dance and Cry, is an interesting one. The front half is very melodic and happy while the back half sounds a lot darker and heavy. Stuck in the middle is an unusually folksy song called "It's Alright" and it might be the most friendly sounding song on the album but the lyrics tell a different story.
"Oh, hey. I had a night; I had a day. I did one million stupid things. I said one billion foolish things. I'm not okay; I got a baseball bat beside my bed to fight off what's inside my head, to fight off what's behind my meds. I'm lonely, lost in pain."
The lyrics, in fact, tell a mixed story. While the lead vocalist sings about being a messed up demon that seems to always make the wrong decisions, the backup vocalists tell him that it's alright, he's human, and that everything will be okay soon enough.
"It's alright, it's okay. It's alright, it's okay. You're not a monster, just a human. And you made a few mistakes. It's alright, it's okay."
In order to pair a beer with such a song, both sides of the story must be met. There is no doubt this must be a heavier and darker beer to complement the lyrics of the lead vocalist. On the other hand, it must be a satisfyingly sweet beer to represent the loved one(s) talking to the one who believes he's a monster. In representation of the band's name, let's call this individual, Mother.

Is it too simple? What about a beer by Mother's Brewing Company? The brewery based in Springfield, MO brews a Porter called Nudie Suit. It's dark and bitter like the demon you are but sweet like the ones you love. The brewery describes the beverage as having "robust chocolate malt flavor with a balanced hop bitterness."
"I believe, yes I believe, that you will see a better day. It's alright."
Take a moment to relax. Stop thinking about all of the bad things you have done and start thinking about how you can bring joy to this world by listening to Mother Mother while drinking something from Mother's.
