The world's upside down.
There are a million ways to interpret "Exits" in Part 1 of the new album, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost, by Foals. Here are two:
- Your whole world has been turned upside down.
- There is no escaping death.
"The black sky came down and the city's underground. The flowers upside down…in our dreams. Oh, to meet you again, to pass you on the stairs, to see you everywhere…in my dreams."
Much like what could be interpreted by the music video, you ultimately want to be the best of the very best. You can dream about being the greatest at what you do but the sad truth is, and very often more than not, there is someone better at it. Once you realize this, you hit a wall you can never pass. You then realize your life is one big metaphor; "my whole world has been turned upside down." This song even mentions upside-down flowers and cities being underground, literally envisioning a world that has been flipped.
"I'm so sorry to have kept you waiting around. I wish I could've come up. I could've shouted out loud but they got exits covered…all the exits underground. I wish I could figure it out but the world's upside down."
Another way to think of this song is as if it were being told by someone who has already lived their life and has been buried six feet underground. Once you're buried, everything and everyone you've once known is now upside down. There are no feasible exits because the only exit is the top of the coffin and that has hundreds of pounds of dirt above it. You might not be daydreaming anymore but some people believe you dream indefinitely after death. The plus side? Now you can dream with everyone you haven't spoke to from the past decades.
"Back to days of yore when we could be sure, all year, all summer. Out where you could be found, I think I found our long lost brother. We should honor the breeze instead of screaming with each other."
Either way, this is a dark story; a story we can all learn from. We should appreciate life for both what we do and what our friends, family, and sometimes even for what our rivals do to keep the world spinning with meaning. Looking for an easy way to appreciate life? Drink beer and listen to music; it's that easy.
The beer that gets paired with this song must:
- figuratively turn your world upside down with astonishing flavor;
- have something that has been grown underground in it; and
- portray the twisted darkness of both the sounds and lyrics.
Peanuts are grown underground and there are so many amazing peanut butter beers! As far as matching precisely with this song, one really hits the nail on the head. Sweet Baby Jesus, a chocolate and peanut butter porter by the Baltimore brewery, DuClaw, will blow you away from your very first sip to the last. It is exactly what you expect, and that alone makes this an amazing porter.
This beer, jet black in color, is a heavy one so take your time with it and enjoy every sip while you listen to every minute of "Exits," which is roughly six minutes. This beer and song will take you on a trip that you won't be sorry you took even if it does bring up the inevitably dark future that awaits your taunting dreams.
Pardon the many metaphors. Part 2 of Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost is expected to release October 18, 2019.
