We're dancing people.

"Purple Hat" by the EDM-rock duo, Sofi Tukker, is as beautiful as a lactose sour.
"Purple hat, cheetah print, dancing on the people…rolled up at the after joint, dancing, dancing on the people…people dancing on the people. I got people on the people, people."
Right away, this song gets as hype and weird as any alternative song can be but you can't help but dance. In a way, the song is like a sour beer. Sours are pretty weird but they are often fresh and full of flavor surprises.
"Everybody in the booth, can tell myself apart from you, now that we're dancing people."
Then you hear a beautiful voice to slow the song down making this new alternative hit enjoyable to listen to on repeat. That's the lactose of the song. No matter the style, lactose in beers really smooths them out and it's hard to just have one.
"See me see you dancing on the people. Climb up on the booth, hanging from the people on the people. My head hits the roof, dancing on the ceiling on the people. I got people on the people."
The two contrasts of the song make something like you have never heard before but it makes for one amazing song. It's the same with lactose sours. Many sours take from a lot of fruits making the beer a little acidity which is not a bad thing. But when you add lactose to such a beer, you get to enjoy all the flavors with a subtle mouthfeel.

Many craft breweries make their own spin on this style of beer and it's definitely worth trying even if you're not the biggest sour fan since the lactose mellows out the tartness. If you see "milk sugar" in the description of the beer, it's a lactose beer. Likewise, if you see "smoothie" or "milkshake" in the name of the beer, it's also probably a lactose beer.

One example of such a great beer comes from Burley Oak Brewing Company in Berlin, Maryland. They have a beer series titled "J.R.E.A.M." which stands for “juice rules everything around me." This series presents fruited sours with lactose. Just check out their tap list online. J.R.E.A.M. is a fan favorite and there are almost always a few on tap.

This blog tries to focus on beers you can find anywhere in the States. While this post shows a series that is easiest to find in one state, lactose sours are becoming more popular thanks to breweries like Burley Oak showing the public how beer can be tasty in a totally unique way.
