From the Blogger: 2020 Recap

Finally! 2020 is over and we are on to a new year! To be honest, I'm not sure if I'll continue this blog but I do appreciate the support. I wouldn't have continued in 2020 if it wasn't for the feedback I heard about my posts from 2019. However, I have started a new project about beer. I created a new website focusing on printouts of brewery trails in my home state of Maryland. If you'd like to check it out, you can head over to mdbeertrails.com . Anyhow...here is a recap of my posts from 2020: Post Song Artist Beer Brewery October 24 From the Blogger: 2020 October 27 Level of Concern Twenty One Pilots The Truth Flying Dog Brewery October 28 Sometimes Nick Lutsko Chocolate Stout Rogue Ales October 29 Because I Want To Aphrodisiac Can I Be Your Friend Panpsychic I Don't Care Man in the Middle Chevy Mustang Pulp Patriot Blackcurrant Kaiser Co-Op Choco Libre Jet Black Heart BrewDog USA October 31 Real Good Feeling Oh The Larceny Lone Star Rio Jade Lone Star Brewing ...

You're my hundred dollar day.

Image
There's something about Tokyo Police Club...they're consistent and its great. If you haven't heard their music yet, just start with some of their hits such as "Your English Is Good" from 2008 or "Hang Your Heart" from 2016. "I need your love. I need your car. I need you, baby. Forget the fights. Forget the shi*. I need you, baby." They came back with a new song and you know its TPC when listening. They seriously deserve a bigger spotlight because their music as a collective is just super addictive. While their consistent with their sound, they are very unique. Their guitar, drums, keys, and vocals only sound like TPC and no one else. "Such a slow change, slow sharks beneath the waves...handstands...'cause you're my hundred dollar day." But what about their new song? It's called "Hundred Dollar Day" and they've done it again! You'll just have to take a listen for yourself but there is a real sense of nosta...

Swallow a half piece of bubble gum.

Image
"Another blonde kid’s du-du-dumb, dumb, dumb." One of the most forward tasting notes in Gordon Biersch's Hefeweizen is bubble gum. In fact, even though bananas and cloves are most commonly associated with hefes, the taste of bubble gum is found in many hefeweizens. "Another band kid’s bu-bu-bum, bu-bu-bum." According to Gordon Biersch themselves , the aroma of their hefe is "slightly sweet and fruity, with the classic banana, citrus and bubble gum ester character of German Hefeweizen yeast, as well as a touch of toasted bread." "Little drummer boy rum-pum-pum, pum, pum." When enjoying this beer, give "Bubblegum" by The Happy Children a listen. Its a simple song but simplicity is what makes this song great just like a good hefeweizen. There are only a few lyrics with some amazing lines rhyming with one-syllable words. It's a soft melody and builds up throughout the song creating a spark of energy. "Swallow a half piece of bu...

Imagine you're running through the jungle and a lion is chasing you.

Image
"Imagine you're running through the jungle and a lion is chasing you." Imagine you're running through the jungle and a lion is chasing you. What are you going to do? Run! Wowza! You're fast! You made some room and realized if a lion is chasing you, this must be sub-Saharan Africa, a large producer of pineapples. You might want to eat some; you need your energy. "All my life people warning me, 'be careful, be careful,' made me anxious every day just to go outside." Ok...for real tho..."running" by Elohim is one catchy tune. Its actually quite motivational. It may start out with a story about running from a lion but its really about just getting on your feet and to keep on moving even if it is because you're pressured to do so. "All my life I just feel like I'm in motion, in motion. Seems like there is always something after me." Back to the story with the lion in (most-likely) Africa. You know you got to pair this song ...

I danced with the devil and I've got to say he's not so tough.

Image
This blog focuses mostly on new songs less than a year old but an exception is being made for "Live from Hell" by Glowbug on the album Fantasma Del Tropico. It's an obscure alt-rock song with sounds of steel drums giving it that Caribbean island vibe. But that's not it. This song features Eddie Hermida, the screamo vocalist of the deathcore metal band, Suicide Silence. This is the first screamo song to be listed on this blog. "To all the heathens, demons...I have got a feeling we'd get along, so shout GIVE ME YOUR WORST...LOVE 'TIL IT HURTS!" This could very well be one of the softest screamo songs you've heard but it just works; it's catchy. The lyrics are pretty dark considering the island-enthused sounds too. "I DANCED WITH THE DEVIL AND I'VE GOT TO SAY he's not so tough." Of course a Caribbean-inspired song needs to be paired with a Caribbean-inspired beer. There may not be any year-round nationally-available beers to co...

I need ya now!

It's time to get dancing with some alternative EDM! The album COLOR BLOND by pluko is full of dance music and its something we could all use during a pandemic with not much going on in the world right now. Of course, you'll have to dance by yourself at home. Choose any song from the album and you'll be bobbing your head or pumping your fist. For the sake of this blog, we will focus on the song "blessings" featuring Nate Traveller. Although, this one might be one of pluko's tame songs but it's still pretty hype. "In this place all by myself. Doesn't matter who's around. Feels like I'm in over my head. Gotta stop staring at the ground." The easiest way to complete something is to start it! You can't just look at the ground and expect to see progress. However, sometimes it is easier to finish what you started when you have your partner to help. "And I wonder if I make it out. Another blessing comes falling down. I know you wanna...

Was it me or the lifestyle?

After some conversations on Twitter with some of the artists I mention below, I found out whoever KAYMC is may have been using the names of other artists to gain a competitive edge to gain listens on Spotify. This is extremely unfortunate — and frankly — a bit sad. I thought about deleting this post. Then I gave it some more thought. I think the sentiment is still there. I believe I shared a valid opinion. Our communities should be more thoughtful and give to each other more often. I really wish I could still say the same about this song. All this being said, I started listening to many of the artists I mentioned in this post and they all have some incredible songs. They are all worth listening to! -The blogger, Tyler. A new artist popped out of nowhere on some people's Spotify Release Radar. The artist is called KAYMC and they released a single called "all gold." It took over the weekly playlist of many Spotify users because they probably listen to one of many artists sp...

Bobby left me and he left me a note.

Image
In "Bobby," Bohdi is sad but he sounds mad. In this incredible angry song in what sounds like literally just one verse, Bohdi talks about how his friend Bobby left him but Bohdi isn't ready for goodbyes. He needs needs a proper goodbye. "Bobby left me and he left me a note. I found a letter on the front porch and he's not coming home. I came to Tallahassee for this son of a b****. Now I'm ripping up the letter and I'm tracing his phone. Bohdi is yelling at you through this entire Irish-punk-like song filled with strings and violin. Bohdi is heated. "I jump in my Suburban; five o'clock on the dash. I'm driving east into the sunrise and I'm missing his a**. Tears pouring down my face. I'm going ninety on twenty-seven. I barely turned twenty-seven. I remember we were dancing." The lyrics really are sad but true Irish-Americans talk about their feelings by yelling and this is exactly what Bohdi sounds like. It's only fitting to d...

Prepare for detonation.

Image
"Battlestations" by Wolfgang Gartner and Kill The Noise starts out like a classic orchestra but in just a few seconds you find out its more like an electronic symphony. The symphony tells a story based in the future where a crew of (potential) starfighters are preparing to battle. "Hard to feel explosives. Power up is locked and loaded. Take your battlestations. Prepare for detonation. Ok, so what beer should we pair with this song? "Prepare for detonation. Detonation. Detonation." If you were on this crew, your captain is telling you to prepare for battle. You must prepare for anything that could come your way. That thing could be an explotion of flavor, potentially a big punch of Grapefruit; a punch right in the face. Rally Cap, a grapefruit shandy by Center of the Universe Brewing Company, is just what you need. After all, what better place is there to take on the universe than starting in the center of it? You gotta take this attack of flavor head on and hi...

I woke up feeling like this gonna be my day.

Image
Do you ever just wake up and you just know it's going to be a great day? You don't know what the day entails but you feel good. "I woke up feeling like this gonna be my day. I've got that poppin' fire every step I take." You walk out the door and you take a deep breath of fresh air. Nothing has even happened yet but the day gets better and better. You hit the road, your mind is clear, you have no plans for the day but you are just enjoying your surroundings regardless if its on the mountains or in the city. "Living that wild life. Not stopping now; no way. Just seeing green lights; won't ever touch the brakes." Now it's time to party. You grab a refreshing beer not just known for its taste but for being good for what it is, a beer; something like a Mexican-style lager. That is basically what "Real Goof Feeling" by Oh The Larceny is all about. It's about taking the day. It's your day and nothing can make it fall apart. The so...

I want to have a party.

Image
Chevy Mustang is the European persona of Max Collins, lead singer of Eve 6 and Fitness . He's basically the man. No one can mess with this classy mother-ucker. Chevy Mustang doesn't care about anything and will do whatever he wants. His confidence is on another level. "Because I Want To" is Chevy Mustang's first creation. He tells us what he wants and he will make it happen. Even if it's not his birthday, he wants to celebrate it. He tells us he wants to go to Disney World, go skinny dipping, pop some popcorn, solve a mystery, date a model, and so much more. He tells us why he wants to do all this too. It's because he wants to! That's it. Nothing more. "I want to have a birthday. I want to have a party. I want to make it happen. Why? Because I want to!" Next up is "Aphrodisiac." Chevy talks about his own aphrodisiac and how it affects him when he's with his lady. He might be on his high horse in this song which isn't any di...

Sometimes the only way out is as a carcass.

Image
You're in the Mafia and you made a deal with the devil. You promised to follow through but you got caught. Now you're going to court and you can't bring up who you're working with. If you do, it's the end of you. "I bet my billionth bottom dollar on a hopeless case and now the devil on my shoulder has a knife to my face." Maybe it's time to talk to daddy. After all, he has connections. He can get you out of anything. But then again, if he helps you, you will pay. No, not with money; you're broke after paying your lawyer. You'll pay with something much more severe, most likely your life. "Sometimes the short end of the stick is the sharpest. Sometimes the only road to take is the darkest. Sometimes all you gotta say is 'Daddy, make it go away.' Sometimes the only way out is as a carcass." After talking to daddy, you find it's in your best interest to stay away from him and his workers. You go back to court and the police as...

You could bring down my level of concern.

Image
Twenty One Pilots' last album, Trench, was much darker than their previous albums and it's great to see a band try something new and challenging. However, their other albums were all over the place which is a good thing. At the time, the idea of combining genres of all kinds was really fresh. Their albums Blurryface and Vessel had songs sharing genres like hip hop, electronic, pop, and rap rock. Their latest single, "Level of Concern," is no different; except this time it's more funky. Twenty One Pilots went back to their roots and its great. "Y ou could bring down my level of concern.  Just need you to tell me we're alright, tell me we're okay." "Level of Concern" is about the pandemic currently taking over the world. In the beginning, people had many concerns. Hell... people are still concerned about a lot including their income and health to name just a few. However, Tyler Joseph, the lead singer of the duo, wrote this song to sing a...
